Define “Project”
Problem: Open source projects aren’t technically projects.
I have bad news for you: your project isn’t a project. More accurately, the common use of “project” in open source communities doesn’t match the definition of “project” as used in the discipline of project management. Open source projects are actually programs, as you saw in the previous chapter. Because this chapter focuses on both disciplines, to avoid confusion it will use “project” by itself to represent the project management discipline and “open source project” to represent the program management discipline. In the rest of the book, you’ll be more focused on how to put the knowledge to use, so we’ll relax our strictness with the word “project.”
