Because of their popularity for certain subjects, topics, or search terms, these sites are recognized as “authorities” by search engines. These sites usually contain very high quality and accurate content, and people often search for them. Most search engines like Google, for instance, have an algorithm that deems a website as being of a higher quality based on the number of high-quality websites linking to it (backlinks).
