Intel, and most other companies that endorse the meritocracy
concept, do so for two major reasons. First, it helps ensure that the
best ideas rise to the top. Second, it raises the odds that its best and
brightest employees will stay motivated and remain with the com-
pany, whether or not they enter the ranks of management and the
