love. As you get more experience, you will capture the attention of clients that are looking for what you
do. Figure 2-14 is a type of image that I personally love to create. After shooting images like this for a cou-
ple years, I now have brides that come in asking if I can do something like this for them.

Giving Clients What They Want
One thing I learned in my transition from the traditional to portrait journalism style (which didn’t exist
when I first started) is that clients have a very predictable priority list when it comes to what they want.
First, if they are forced to purchase prints by the photographer, they will almost invariably purchase the
family group shots first. Then depending on their budget, they may also purchase a very simple portrait
of the two of them together, then small groupings of friends, then overall shots of the event, and finally
artsy shots. Even clients with the most limited of budgets invariably come back around Christmas to pur-
chase a couple of 8 x 10s of the big family group. This says a lot about what clients need in order to fill
their obligations of gift giving during the holidays, but does it say ...
