Part II ✦ Shooting Weddings on Location
70-200 telephoto
Another lens that works great around the mirror is the 70-200mm telephoto. If you happen to be stuck in
a small room, you can still use this lens by zooming in really close on faces and other small details as the
makeup is going on. However, if you can get back a little farther away from the action, you can still zoom
in close on your subjects while taking advantage of the fact that your distance puts them much more
at ease.
Positioning myself in a nearby room and shooting through an open doorway into the bride’s dressing
room allowed me to take the image in Figure 6-6. The telephoto allowed me to get so far away that the
bride completely forgot I was there. This is a huge advantage over shorter lenses like the 50mm, which
can get a very similar image, but from a much closer range.
Figure 6-6: For this shot, the bride was
completely unaware of my presence
because I used a long lens and shot
through a doorway from an adjacent
room.
