Bill and Anne operate Holland Photo Arts, a successful digital wedding business in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Bill was kind enough to share the details of his home-office setup to provide a little peek behind the curtain,
so to speak, in this family-owned business.
Office space
We work out of our home. My office is in our basement, which is also a partial living area, but it enables me
to largely separate work and personal environments. Anne’s office is in a recently completed addition to our
home, which she painted just the way she wanted it — hot pink! This new space gives her a great view of the
back yard and her own dedicated office space with lots of storage capability.
While it’s extraordinarily convenient having a ten-second commute, part of our business has involved learn-
ing how to balance our work life with our personal lives. In the early years, we worked constantly with hardly
a day off. Now we’re taking a little more time off, but it’s difficult to do when your computer is sitting right
there, beckoning for attention. We spend a lot of time communicating via e-mail with our clients, so it makes
sense for us to maintain office hours to aid with the balance.
