Shooting Outdoors
A
ny discussion about shooting outdoor weddings requires that the day be broken down into the
different types of light you might possibly encounter on the job. This chapter covers general con-
cepts as well as specific techniques that help you deal with bright sun, complete darkness, and every-
thing in between.
Knowing how to shoot is only half the problem when working outdoors. You also have to know how to
look around and pick places where the light has certain desirable characteristics that will enhance your
group shots or your romantic portraits. The final portion of this chapter discusses the key elements to
look for in recognizing good outdoor lighting opportunities.

Equipment
The good news is that there is no special equipment required for shooting an outdoor wedding. You
won’t need anything more than your standard set of gear including a camera, three lenses, a couple
CompactFlash cards, and a hotshoe mounted flash.
Except for the time spent in the dressing rooms, many weddings take place completely outdoors. On
these days you may find yourself going from the dressing rooms straight out into one of the most chal-
lenging light situations a wedding photographer can experience
