In the two examples in Figure 15-13, I magnified the view to 200% so that the effects of correct sharpening

and excessive sharpening can be compared. The image on the right has been oversharpened. The effects

of oversharpening are easily seen in places where sharp black lines meet light toned areas (see arrows).

Sharpening works by finding these lines between light and dark areas and emphasizing them. A small

amount of this effect serves to create the impression of sharpness, while an overdose creates a white

halo where light and dark objects meet.

The settings in Figure 15-12 are a good starting point for the average digital camera image. However,

sharpening should be fine-tuned visually, by adjusting the sliders while watching (at 100% magnification)

for the white halo, which is the telltale sign of over sharpening.
