The only drawback to using a custom white balance setting is that it will balance only one lighting loca-

tion at a time. If you need to move back and forth between several rooms or between completely differ-

ent lighting in one area, you would be much better off to stick with the Auto white balance setting. You

could also shoot in RAW, which allows you to adjust the white balance settings to perfection when you

process the images in the computer.

Balancing out the light for true colors works great for the majority of the images you create. However,

after you capture the essentials of the story, try experimenting with different white balance settings.

Sometimes the setting for some other light source produces a very different and pleasant look. Obviously

the effect will not look realistic, but if you want to try something different that has the potential to pro-

duce dramatic results, try switching to the wrong white balance setting.

For example, shooting with the shade setting in a room with Tungsten lights produces a beautiful golden

glow such as that in Figure 6-11, that can work great for a romantic scene. Shooting with the Tungsten

setting in window light produces a striking blue tone. Once again, the easiest and most adjustable way to

experiment with this is to shoot in RAW and pick through the different white balance settings ...
