Move slowly. Any quick motion is very distracting to the guests but a photographer that walks
slowly from place to place is easily ignored and soon disappears into the background of the event.
Move around. Don’t stay in one place too long. It’s better to annoy everyone a tiny bit than to com-
pletely ruin one person’s experience by standing right in front of them the whole time.
Wear dark clothing. Dark toned clothing attracts much less attention than lighter tones and bright
colors are absolutely unacceptable for the photographer. The only exceptions to these guidelines
are if you wear certain clothing to fit in with the dress code for that particular event. For example,
a bright red shirt with flower patterns may get you banned from the church in your hometown, but
it fits right in at a Hawaiian beach wedding.
Don’t do any acrobatics. Never attempt to climb over something, or stand on a chair, or climb to a
vantage point in a small tree, or any other acrobatics that can potentially result in you falling on
your head right in the middle of the ceremony. Any great shot you might possibly get by climbing
up there would certainly be overshadowed by the embarrassment of falling. Don’t risk it.
Time your disturbances. Certain moments are better at camouflaging a disturbance. For example,
the best times to move are when the guests are standing ...
