Image Manipulation
Image manipulation programs offer an incredibly complex and powerful set of tools that every
digital wedding photographer needs to master. Photoshop is, of course, the program of choice for the
digital imaging professional. However, it should be mentioned that there are many less expensive pro-
grams that perform the basic functions that are required by the digital wedding photographer —
although without the depth of tools and abilities contained in the Photoshop software. ACDSee Pro and
Photoshop Elements are two of the more powerful and cost-effective programs available. Apple’s
Aperture and Adobe’s Lightroom are two newer software offerings that have a lot of digital image manip-
ulation abilities — especially if you shoot in the RAW format.
There are many fine books on the subject of image manipulation, but this particular book is by no means
a complete tutorial. However, several techniques described here are absolutely essential to the daily
working of a digital photographer.
Levels
Many images come out of the camera looking rather flat and dull. A very simple recipe for adding some
sparkle back into an image is to open it in Photoshop and adjust the Levels. Figures 15-7 through 15-10
illustrate the following steps.
