Chapter 9 Documenting the Ceremony
Catching the Guests
One of the most difficult parts about photographing a wedding ceremony is that you have such an obvi-
ous focus to the event with the bride and groom up at the altar, that it can be hard to remain aware of the
parents and other guests that are part of the ceremony as well. For a few moments of the ceremony you
absolutely must be focused on catching one of the big top ten shots. This leaves a lot of time for you to
move around to get images of both parents watching from the front row, the grandparents, friends, and
so on. You should be especially aware of getting emotional shots of anyone in the crowd that may be
laughing or crying as in Figure 9-8.

I always like to try to catch a shot of the parents that shows their bond with the newlyweds in the back-
ground. Sometimes it may be that they are holding hands, or looking at each other, or mom may be lean-
ing into dad as she wipes a tear from her eye. Better yet would be to catch dad wiping the tear from her
eyes. My favorite of these images (so far) can be seen in Figure 9-9.
How do you make your ceremony work stand out? Obviously you won’t be the first photographer to
