Exposure Formula for Shooting Groups in Sunlight
If you absolutely have to shoot your groups in direct, midday sun, try these techniques.
✦ Choose a location that has the same light hitting the entire group.
✦ Set your flash on TTL without dialing in any exposure compensation.
✦ Set your ISO to the lowest possible speed.
✦ If possible, turn your group members so the sun is on their backs and use your flash to light their
faces.
✦ Use a wide lens to get you in close enough for your flash to work.
✦ Raise your aperture (higher numbers) until you get a shutter speed that syncs with your flash.

Fill flash
On-camera flash can also be used outdoors during the day. Figure 7-6 shows how much brighter the col-
ors appear when you use a fill flash. The term fill flash means to set the flash so that it produces less light
than the outdoor light — just enough to fill in any dark shadows. You do this by dialing in a flash expo-
