The form factor is the standardized shape and layout of the motherboard. Most motherboards sold today are either Mini-ITX, Micro-ATX or Standard-ATX.

The most common motherboard form factor is ATX. ATX is short for Advanced Technology Extended and is a specification used to outline motherboard and power supply configurations.
Introduced in 1995, the ATX motherboard specification included IO support, and placed all the required connectors for keyboard/mouse as well as other external peripherals directly on the motherboard.
