Commonly pronounced “yoofey”, or “yoo-ee-fey”, the acronym stands for Unified Extensible Firmware Interface and replaces the old BIOS in modern PCs.
Like the BIOS, UEFI checks what hardware components are connected at boot, and performs various start up tests (POST).

UEFI scans the GPTs (or partition tables) of the attached hard disk drives to find an EFI Service/System Partition - a partition that stores the EFI bootloader. The boot loader then starts the operating system from the correct partition.
