DHCP Servers
DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol and is responsible for automatically allocating IP addresses to devices on a network.
Your Internet broadband router at home contains a DHCP server to automatically allocate each device an IP address, whether it is your phone, laptop or PC.
Devices connecting to a network broadcast a request to the DHCP server. The DHCP server sends back an IP address from its address pool along with a time period for which the allocation is valid called a lease, as well as DNS and gateway addresses, and the network’s subnet mask.
