Thunderbolt ports are high-speed data transfer interfaces that can support transfer speeds of up to 40Gbps, depending on the version. Thunderbolt 1 & 2 used the mini display connector and is somewhat slow & obsolete. Thunderbolt 3 & 4 uses the USB-C connector and has a data transfer speed of up to 40Gbps.

Thunderbolt ports are standard on many Macs and used for connecting peripherals, external displays, and high-speed data storage. A Thunderbolt 3/4 device can be plugged into a USB-C port, but it will only work to the extent that the USB-C port’s capabilities allow.
