This is a master socket mounted on the motherboard for housing the CPU. These sockets are known as Zero Insertion Force (or ZIF) meaning the CPU drops into the socket and secured with a locking lever. This allows the CPU to be replaced or upgraded.

There are various types of socket. For example, the Intel Core i5 uses Socket LGA 1156, Core 2 Duo uses socket LGA 775, and the AMD Ryzen 5 uses Socket AM4. Each CPU type is only compatible with its own socket type.
