It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

When you’re working with any tool except the Type tool, you press the Spacebar to get
the Hand tool (which you click-and-drag to move around your document), but when you
have the Type tool there’s a different shortcut—instead hold the Option key (PC: Alt key)
when you have a text insertion point, and your Type tool will temporarily change into the
Hand tool.
