New Top-Level Domains
As of 2013, things officially "got real" as the ICANN's new TLD process kicked into motion and released the wave of the new top-level domains into the naming ecosystem. While New gTLDs are defined as any TLDs entered into the Root after January 1 2013, the TLD expansion began in earnest during 2014.
The 2013 expansion is distinct from earlier new TLD expansions in that, for the first time, it became possible for practically any entity to apply for a new TLD. The previous two rounds of expansion, 2000 and 2004, were much more limited in scope and produced only seven and eight new TLDs, respectively. The 2014 round opened the floodgates, and so far over 1,000 new TLDs have been delegated into the root.
