GRE Tunnels are similar in principle to reverse proxies in that when used in a mitigation context, they filter out hostile traffic and send the rest on to the destination nameservers. This operates at level-3, filtering and forwarding individual packets.
Where the reverse-proxy is akin to a nameserver in front of a nameserver, the GRE tunnel approach is like a firewall in front of a nameserver.
