This is perhaps one of the most common DNS use cases, dynamic DNS enables you to map a hostname to a non-static IP address (such as one temporarily assigned to a residential broadband connection and subject to change).
Doing so enables you to do any number of things, such as run a personal mail hub, web server, or PBX on a residential connection.
A process monitors the public-facing IP address of the network demarcation point, such as a router, and when it notices a change, it triggers a process to update the IP address assigned to the hostname in the DNS.
