The output of a dig command can be split into four main sections (not all of which will be present in all responses). The HEADER and QUESTION sections will always be present. Then there will be ANSWER, ADDITIONAL, and AUTHORITY sections, if their corresponding COUNT header fields are non-zero. Under some circumstances, there may also be an OPT PSEUDOSECTION. These sections correspond to the format of DNS query packets, as outlined in Chapter 5, A Tale of Two Nameservers.
In the following sections, we look at the response to the dig lookup. Take a look at the code line:
