Network Configuration Types: Topologies
Networks also can be characterized by their basic shape or physical
configuration, called their topology. A topology defines how devices are organized
physically relative to one another in a LAN; their physical configuration doesn’t
necessarily reflect their logical connectivity. The three main types of network
topologies are star, ring, and bus, as shown in Figure 2-3. The one most
predominantly in use today is the star.
