• Data Encryption Standard/Triple Data Encryption Standard (DES/
3DES)—DES uses a 56-bit secret key encryption system for security.
3DES (DES applied three times) results in effective 168-bit secret key
security.
• Advanced Encryption Standard (AES)—AES is available in three
secret key sizes (128-bit, 192-bit, and 256-bit). The higher the number of
bits in the key, the harder it is for hackers to break the key. AES is
designed to replace single DES, but it will coexist with 3DES, which will
remain a government-sanctioned encryption algorithm for the
foreseeable future.
