Doing Taxes the Right Way

One thing I need to mention: Even before you set up QuickBooks for payroll, at a minimum, you need a few other items if you want to do payroll the right way. (If you want to do payroll the wrong way, you’re reading the wrong book.)

check.png A federal employer identification (EIN) number

check.png An Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) account with the U.S. Treasury

check.png A state employer ID number (if you withhold state income taxes)

check.png An unemployment tax ID number

check.png I-9 and W-4 tax forms

Getting an employer ID number

To get an employer ID number, you need to file an SS-4, Application for Employer Identification Number form, with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). You can get this form at the IRS website (www.irs.gov) or by calling the IRS and asking for one.
