Not only does your iPhone have face detection (which balances the exposure across your subjects’ faces when shooting portraits), it also has scene detection, which can tell if what you’re shooting is a landscape or a lamp, a person or a poodle. It can automatically apply what Apple calls a “tailored look” it thinks will improve the look of the scene you’re shooting. If you’d rather make this choice yourself, you can toggle this feature on/off in the Settings app, under Camera, by tapping the switch for Scene Detection.
