It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

You know what’s standing between you and making absolutely beautiful portraits out in the direct, afternoon sun? A simple $9 accessory. It’s a tool the pros have been using for years, and they continue to use it because it’s so effective. In fact, when I’m teaching a live seminar I say it’s the best $9 you can spend on your photography. It’s called a 1-stop diffuser, and all you do is have a friend hold it up high, between the sun and your subject, and it softens and spreads the light, taking that harsh, nasty sunlight and making it soft and beautiful.
