We love the iPhone’s Portrait mode for its ability to blur the background behind our subject, separating them from the background for a more “I shot this with a DSLR” pro look (we looked at Portrait mode on page 44). But, it’s helpful to know what actually controls how blurry the background gets when you’re not using Portrait mode. A big determining factor is simply how far your subject is from the background. If your subject is standing 12" in front of a wall, even Portrait mode won’t give you enough blurring to get the picture where you want it.
