We know that direct sunlight is a recipe for a squinty, hard-shadows-on-the-face, ugliness type of portrait, right? But, if you wind up shooting on a really cloudy or overcast day, those clouds act like diffusers because the direct sunlight isn’t coming through. The clouds act like “nature’s softbox” and the light is softer and more flattering. The light is also a bit flatter (like when you shoot under a tree or in the shade), so you might want to consider taking a black reflector with you to help get some more depth and dimension into the shot (we just talked about this on the previous page).
