Sometimes we can’t get around shooting in direct sunlight. Maybe there’s no available shade nearby, or you don’t have a diffuser (see page 64), but basically, you want to make a portrait right then, so it’s going to be in direct sun. So, what do we do to make a really nice shot? Two things: (1) Place your subject’s back toward the sun. This gets them out of the direct light (the sun is behind them), so it already takes the squinting away, and you have the added bonus of the sun lighting the back of their hair.
