When your subject directly faces the camera, they are at their widest. This is a great pose if you’re shooting an athlete or anyone who you want to look large and imposing. However, if you don’t want your subject to look large, an old trick is to have them turn their body a bit, which makes the front angle to the camera smaller, making them look smaller and slimmer in the photo. That’s why you see this pose so often on magazine covers and in ads—it’s incredibly flattering.
