Large objects (LOBs) and XML documents are generally stored in a location separate from the table row that references them. However, you can choose to store a LOB or XML document (up to 32 KB in size) inline, in a base table row, to simplify access to it. LOBs and XML documents that are stored inline can be compressed along with other relational data. Additionally, XML data in the XML storage object of a table is eligible for compression if the XML columns are created using Db2 9.7, and if you enable the table for data row compression. (XML columns created prior to Db2 9.7 are not eligible for compression.)
