Tablespace planning
Tablespaces are very important structures in Db2, containing tables, indexes, and large and long objects. In earlier versions of Db2, tablespaces were made up of a number of containers that mapped to the physical disk. Starting with Db2 10.1, storage groups were added to provide a layer of abstraction between tablespaces and the physical disk, allowing tablespaces to be moved between the storage groups based on business needs (fast SSD drives for the recent data, medium SAS drives for the previous month's data, and slow SATA drives for archived data).
