Editing
Just as the secret of good make-up is that it is not ‘seen’, the skills and techniques of an editor are invisible to the audience. As members of the public watch their favourite programme, they are unaware that it has been constructed from many different shots, possibly taken from many different angles. It seems like one continuous event. An editor selects and coordinates one shot with another to achieve a flow of images. The sound also has to be synchronized with the visual material. An editor plays a major part in the production, whether it is creating an atmosphere in a drama or constructing a news item.
