It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
KPI
The key to creating a saved search that appears on the dashboard as a KPI is to ensure that there are no date filters on the Criteria tab of that KPI. The reason is very logical. KPIs allow you to view data over time, whether looking at the current period or the previous comparative range. KPIs are also linked to trend graphs, which analyze a trend over time. Adding a date filter on the criteria would break the entire timeline and restrict us to the dates within that date filter.
The other important aspect is to ensure that a date field appears in the available filters. Without it, you will only see the present value and will not be able to use the comparative date range option.
