Using layers efficiently enables you to expand the functionality of a drawing. You can, if desired, maintain all the information about a project contained within a single drawing. By toggling the visibility of layers off and on, you can change the drawing to display the information you want to convey. For example, all of the discipline drawings for a single building floor, such as architectural, structural, electrical, and so on, can easily be managed in this way. Using this in combination with linetypes allows specific information in the drawing to be highlighted. And, by modifying properties of certain objects, either on layers or individually, gives you complete control of how the drawing can be displayed.
