It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Importing Images in AutoCAD Drawings
Graphical data can be stored in either raster or vector format. AutoCAD 2000 drawing data is typically stored in vector format because vector format files are much smaller and more accurate than raster files. Raster files (such as .TIF, .BMP, and .GIF files) store every point in an image as a series of dots or pixels, whereas vector files store only critical information such as start point, endpoint, or radius values.
AutoCAD 2000 enables users to import raster images in many formats and overlay these images on the native vector format drawings. Raster applications come in many forms:
