Field codes are placeholders for data that change in a document. This is useful for creating form letters and labels. Word automatically insert fields when you insert a page number or building block, or when you create a table of contents. You can also manually insert fields to automate parts of a document, such as performing calculations (using the = (formula field) or merging data. Field codes appear between curly brackets ({ }).
