These areas dedicated to other functions reduce
the area available for light capture, and with each
photosite doing its own analog to digital conver-
sion, uniformity from photosite to photosite is
generally lower. In addition, the on-board circuitry
takes up what would be a useful photon gathering
area, reducing the “ll factor,” the percentage of
the overall sensor area available for gathering light.
