Stacks are the spring-loaded lists of files that appear whenever a folder on the Dock is clicked. With a fresh install of OS X, Downloads is set up as a stack on the right of the Dock, near the trash icon. However, you can add your own folders by dragging and dropping them there (release the mouse button only when the other folders have slid out of the way), but remember—you’re not copying the folder to the Dock. You’re only creating a shortcut there.
