Holding down Shift, Control, or Option while viewing virtually any application or system menu will display various alternatives to standard menu choices. For example, selecting a file and then holding down Option and clicking Finder’s File menu changes the Open option to Open and Close Window, which will open the selected file and then close the Finder window immediately afterward.
Try holding down a combination of the keys—for example, holding down Shift in addition to Option will reveal further hidden options.
The number of alternative options displayed varies depending on the support within the application, with the Mac’s built-in applications being particularly well supported.
