The Dock acts like a shortcut, sparing you from using the Finder any time you want to run a program or open a file. In addition, the Dock also comes in handy for switching between programs and program windows, and quitting programs from one convenient location:
Loading and switching programs: Click an icon on the Dock.
Switching to a different open file: Right-click an icon on the Dock and click a filename.
Shutting down a program: Right-click an icon on the Dock and choose Quit.
