If you use a laptop Macintosh, encrypting your data can protect it in case someone steals your computer. With encryption turned on, a thief won't be able to read any files stored in your home folder. If you use a desktop Macintosh, it's less likely that someone will steal your computer, so encryption is more useful for protecting against others peeking at your files, such as your supervisor, co-workers, or even family members.
