FreeBSD

On the whole, FreeBSD installation works much like installation of any other OS. It does use an unusual partitioning scheme, however, in which a primary partition is split into subpartitions. In practice, this split partition works much like an extended partition, but the subpartitions created in this way aren't readable by most other OSs.

Partition Requirements

Like Microsoft's OSs, FreeBSD requires a primary partition in which to install. This partition bears the type code 0xa5. Unlike Microsoft's OSs, FreeBSD's primary partition can reside on a second or subsequent hard disk. FreeBSD's partitioning program sometimes refers to PC-style partitions as slices.
