VMware

Vmware (http://www.vmware.com) is an unusually versatile emulator. The emulators I've discussed so far all emulate just one OS or at best a small range of OSs. (In principle, something like DOSEMU or OS/2's DOS subsystem could run non-DOS 16-bit OSs, but in practice this capability is very limited and is seldom if ever used.) VMware, by contrast, can run any of several different OSs. As of version 1.1, VMware can run the following OSs (known as guest OSs when run in VMware):

  • DOS

  • Windows 9x

  • Windows NT (including Windows 2000)

  • FreeBSD

  • Linux

VMware must run under an OS, of course, and that host OS is either Linux or Windows NT (including Windows 2000). VMware does not run under Windows 9x. It is possible that the list of OSs supported ...
