Standards-Based Tools and Protocols
Beyond the freely available software that has been ported to a variety of platforms, there are tools and protocols that are built on standards. In the case of a standards-based tool, the programs available might differ from one OS to another, but they're compatible across platforms because they create common file formats or intercommunicate across a network.
