IIoT systems encompass and connect a diverse and distributed array of systems, components, and networks that utilize a variety of protocols, and are expected to scale and deliver end-to-end services safely and securely.

The IIoT system must respond to changing environments and evolving technologies and standards without interrupting service. This requires adaptable methods of composing services where components can be integrated dynamically at run time, which is not possible with point-to-point connections.
