Use cases in oil and gas
As we described in Chapter 1, The Industrial Internet Revolution, the oil and gas industry was an early proponent of using analytics at the edge, even before IIoT was a concept. Today's IIoT initiatives rely on sensors and smart devices in remote locations and in both downstream and upstream oil and gas production. Some of the projects currently focus on these areas and provide these benefits:
- Drilling and production: Predictive maintenance of equipment, improved energy and water utilization.
- Exploration: Improved geologic analysis.
