As we described in Chapter 1, The Industrial Internet Revolution, the oil and gas industry was an early proponent of using analytics at the edge, even before IIoT was a concept. Today's IIoT initiatives rely on sensors and smart devices in remote locations and in both downstream and upstream oil and gas production.
