Network layer consideration

As described in Chapter 2, Architectural Approaches for Success, IIoT systems generally follow established architectural patterns:

  • Three-tier architecture
  • Gateway-mediated edge connectivity
  • Layered databus

Networks enable data flows between tiers and gateways. The devices in the edge tier are connected by a proximity network. An access network connects the edge to the platform tier. A service network connects the enterprise tier to the platform tier, and potentially to the edge tier via the access network.
